Heather in the hills

It’s that time of year (July-October) when the Heather in the Scottish hills is in full bloom and the horizon takes on a wonderful purple/pink hue, particularly here in the Borders.

Heather has been used in many ways including as fuel, fodder, building materials, thatch, packing and ropes. It was also used to make brooms which is how it got its Latin name, Calluna is derived from the Greek word meaning ‘to brush’. Heather ale has been brewed for many centuries in Scotland.

Yet again I’m trying to get a great shot but it’s still a work in progress. My two favourite spots are Minch Moor above Innerleithen and the slopes of Broad Cairn above the Megget and Talla reservoirs.

I’ll keep roaming the hills or getting up there on the ebike and you never know, maybe one will make it to the gallery page before the 2025 season is over.
